QCE Biology Study Guide
QCE Biology is decided by four assessments in Units 3 and 4: the IA1 data test (10%), the IA2 student experiment (20%), the IA3 research investigation (20%) and the external examination (50%). Internal and external assessment are worth exactly the same, so neither half can rescue the other. The thing that separates results is rarely how much biology you know; across four cohorts QCAA has named the same technique problems every single year.
This guide describes Biology 2025 v1.3, which applies to Year 11 from 2025 and Year 12 from 2026. The 2026 cohort is the first assessed under it.
How the marks add up

Units 1 and 2 carry assessment guidance only. They matter because Unit 3 assumes them, not because they contribute marks.
What the state gets wrong, four years running
The strongest thing in the QCAA subject reports is not any single year's commentary, it is what repeats. Four consecutive reports name the same handful of problems, and every one of them is a technique problem, not a content problem.
1. Not reading the cueing factors. Named in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The cognitive verb, the number of marks, the key terms and the stimulus each tell you something about the shape of the answer. The 2023 report puts it concretely: a comparison requires identification of similarities, differences and their significance. Answer the verb that was asked, not the one you revised.
2. Describing and explaining under exam conditions. Named in 2024 and 2025, with a different content list each year. These are the two verbs that carry the most marks in the paper and the two the cohort handles worst.
3. Integrating knowledge to explain a phenomenon. Named in 2022, 2024 and 2025. The examples change (why mutations do not always change the phenotype; why genetic drift is high in a bottlenecked population; why molecular sequence data beats anatomical data) but the shape does not: two ideas have to be joined, and answers stop after the first one.
4. Generalising instead of engaging with the stimulus. Named in 2023 and 2025. When a question hands you a karyotype, a graph or a data table, the marks are in what that specific stimulus shows, not in what you know about the topic in general.
5. Confusing closely related terms. Named in 2024 and 2025: allele versus gene, sex chromosome versus sex cell, population growth versus population growth rate, negative feedback versus homeostasis. Answer about population growth when the question asked about growth rate and you have answered a different question, however good the biology is.
Where the marks are actually lost
QCAA publishes what the cohort did well and badly, but not at the level of individual command words. Across 30,613 marked attempts on AusGrader, the pattern lines up with what the board says: the weakest verbs are the ones that ask you to produce an account, and the strongest are the ones that ask you to recognise something.

Describe and explain sitting near the bottom corroborates the board's finding independently, on a different sample and a different method.
The content that gives the most trouble
Across our marked attempts, these Unit 3 and Unit 4 dot points sit furthest below the 73.1% overall average. They are 2019-era questions mapped onto 2025 dot points, so read them as "this content is hard", not as evidence about how the current syllabus assesses it.

Practise these against real past paper questions rather than notes. Unit 3 splits into biodiversity and populations and functioning ecosystems and succession; Unit 4 splits into genetics and heredity and continuity of life on Earth. Do not chase a fixed grade boundary

Boundaries are set each year against the reporting standards, and every one of them moved at least once across those four years. The A cut-off rose two marks between 2022 and 2024. Any target you take from an older cohort is a guess about yours.
For scale: around 76 to 80% of the state achieves an A or B every year, out of roughly 14,000 students completing Units 3 and 4 across about 450 schools.

How is QCE Biology assessed?
Four assessments in Units 3 and 4. IA1 data test is worth 10%, IA2 student experiment 20%, IA3 research investigation 20%, and the external examination 50%. The three internal assessments are set and marked by your school then confirmed by QCAA. Units 1 and 2 carry assessment guidance only and do not count towards your result.
Which syllabus does QCE Biology use in 2026?
Biology 2025 v1.3, published January 2026. It applied to Year 11 from 2025 and Year 12 from 2026, so the 2026 cohort is the first to be assessed under it. Version 1.3 changed file metadata only; the assessment content has been unchanged since v1.1 in July 2024.
What mark do you need for an A in QCE Biology?
There is no fixed cut-off. Boundaries are set each year against the reporting standards, and every boundary moved at least once between 2022 and 2025. In 2025 an A ran from 87 to 100, but in 2022 it started at 85, so a target taken from an old cohort will be wrong for yours.
What do QCE Biology students get wrong most often?
Reading the cueing factors before answering. QCAA named it in all four subject reports from 2022 to 2025: the cognitive verb, the mark allocation, the key terms and the stimulus all tell you what the answer needs, and responses that skip them lose marks they knew the biology for.
Is QCE Biology internal or external assessment worth more?
They are equal. The three internal assessments total 50% and the external examination is the other 50%, so a strong exam cannot rescue weak internals and strong internals cannot carry a weak exam.
