QCE Biology IA1 data test: how to get top marks
Your IA1 is worth 10% and is marked out of 10 on a single criterion, converted from your raw score to a percentage and rounded down to a cut-off band. Every paper splits its marks into three fixed proportions: about 30% on calculating or identifying unknown quantities, about 30% on trends and patterns, and about 40% on conclusions drawn from analysis. That last figure is the one students never hear, and it means the biggest block of marks in the paper rewards reasoning about data, not getting a number right.
What the task actually asks
IA1 is a supervised, individual data test. You are given two to four datasets you have not seen before, drawn from practicals, activities or case studies covered in Unit 3, and you answer questions about them. Responses are short: single words, sentences up to 150 words, or calculations. You may use a QCAA-approved graphics or scientific calculator.
Conditions. 5 minutes perusal, 60 minutes working time, sat alone and supervised.
The question specifications table
QCAA requires every IA1 instrument to match these proportions within ±2% (syllabus p. 39):

Two things follow from this table that are worth building your revision around.
First, conclusions carry the most marks in the paper, at around 40%. Most students prepare for a data test by practising calculations, because calculation feels like the hard part. But the largest single block of marks rewards drawing a conclusion from the data and justifying it, which is a different skill from getting a number right.
Second, the verb in a question tells you which objective it is testing, and therefore what shape of answer earns the marks. A question that says identify wants an unknown quantity or feature (Objective 2). A question that says compare wants similarities and differences (Objective 3). A question that says justify or infer wants a conclusion supported by reasoning (Objective 4). Reading the verb before you start writing tells you which of the three sections you are in and what the marker is looking for.
How marks are awarded
IA1 is marked on a single criterion out of 10, using a percentage cut-off rather than performance-level bands: above 90% earns 10, above 80% earns 9, above 70% earns 8, above 60% earns 7, above 50% earns 6, above 40% earns 5, and so on down.
There is no band to reach by writing more. Every mark on the paper is worth the same amount towards your final score, unlike a criterion marked by descriptor where a longer, more sophisticated response can jump a whole band. In IA1, picking up individual marks across the paper is the only lever you have.
How marks split within a question
The 2025 subject report gives a concrete example for a 2-mark infer item: 1 mark is for the conclusion itself, and 1 mark is for appropriate reasoning supporting it. The general pattern is worth carrying into every multi-mark conclusion question: a bare conclusion with no reasoning is only ever going to pick up about half the marks available, whatever the total is worth.
Common mistakes
Treating limitations as a methodology question. Effective responses identify limitations from evidence in the data itself (outliers, gaps, the spread of the values you were given), not from criticising the experimental procedure. This falls under the trends, patterns and limitations section of the specifications table (Objective 3), and the subject report specifically flags students who write about method instead of data as missing the objective.
Not reading what the verb is asking for. The report gives the example of an Objective 2 identify item, which asks for an unknown quantity or feature, being answered as though it asked for a conclusion drawn from analysis. Check the verb before you answer: it tells you which of the three specification categories the question sits in, and answering in the wrong register loses marks even when the underlying biology is right.
Under-showing working on calculations. Calculate is the weakest cognitive verb in our own marking data (below), and Objective 2 questions are worth about 30% of the paper. If a calculation goes wrong, working that shows your method can still pick up marks; an answer with no working cannot.
Where the marks go on calculations
QCAA's subject reports recommend more practice on the numeracy underneath biology: rearranging equations, calculating percentages, and determining ratios. Worth reading that carefully, because the same reports also say students handled simple calculations well, naming the Lincoln index and estimating population size from quadrat data. The gap is not arithmetic. It is manipulating a relationship before you put numbers into it.
Our own figures point at the same place from a different angle. Across 30,613 marked attempts on AusGrader in QCE Biology, calculate is the weakest cognitive verb we measure, averaging 55.7% across 268 attempts against a 73.1% overall average. That is one platform's self-selected users rather than the state cohort, so treat it as corroboration rather than a headline, but it agrees with QCAA about where the difficulty sits.
Since Objective 2 questions carry around 30% of the marks on every data test, this is not general advice. It is preparation for a fixed third of the paper.
2025 syllabus changes
Perusal time was reduced from 10 minutes to 5 minutes. The question specifications table itself was revised, with compare now aligning more closely to Objective 3, reflecting that a comparison is fundamentally about similarities and differences rather than a conclusion. Cladistics and phylogeny also moved out of Unit 3 and into Unit 4 Topic 2, so content on that topic may no longer suit an IA1 dataset the way it did under the 2019 syllabus.
