QCE Biology IA2 student experiment: how to get top marks

Your IA2 is worth 20% and is marked out of 20, five marks each across four criteria: Forming, Finding, Analysing, and Interpreting and Evaluating. The difference between the middle band and the top band in every one of them is a single adjective, so the practical task is knowing what QCAA means by considered, justified, thorough and specific and relevant. This guide works through each criterion using QCAA's own definitions and its published examples of marked student work.

What the task actually asks

You modify an experiment. Not design one from nothing. The syllabus is specific: you refine, extend or redirect an experiment relevant to Unit 3, based on a practical or simulation you have already done in class, to address your own research question.

The task requires you to identify an experiment to modify, develop a research question, research background science to inform both the question and the methodology, conduct a risk assessment and account for those risks in the method, run the experiment, collect data, process and present it, analyse it for trends and for uncertainty and limitations, draw a conclusion, evaluate reliability and validity, suggest improvements and extensions, and communicate all of it in a scientific genre.

The syllabus notes that scientific inquiry is non-linear and iterative, so you are not expected to work through that list in order.

Conditions. Individual task, developed in class time and your own time, designed around roughly 10 hours of class time. Written up to 2000 words, or multimodal up to 11 minutes with at least two modes delivered at once.

What can be done as a group: identifying an experiment, developing the research question, conducting the risk assessment, running the experiment, and collecting data. Everything after that is yours alone.

Forming (5 marks)

Marked on your rationale, your modifications, your research question, whether your method collects enough of the right data, and your use of genre and referencing conventions.

QCAA defines the top-band terms directly. A considered rationale shows informed application of unit concepts to establish a clear purpose for the experiment, and explains the relevance of the independent and dependent variables. Justified modifications explain how each modification will improve the reliability or validity of your evidence.

There is one trap specific to Unit 3. Your research question has to let you investigate biodiversity or ecosystem dynamics. QCAA warns that experiments on how abiotic factors affect plants must link clearly to Unit 3 concepts such as carrying capacity, population growth or species distribution. A perfectly good plant-growth experiment that never connects to those concepts is not a Unit 3 research question.

Finding (5 marks)

Marked on risk and ethical management, the raw data you collect, and your scientific language.

Considered management means careful and deliberate handling of factors specific to your investigation, not a generic hazard table. QCAA's examples are adherence to ethical and cultural guidelines, material safety data sheets, and appropriate disposal of chemicals. A risk assessment that would fit any experiment in the school is the clearest signal of a middle-band response.

On scientific language, QCAA describes fluent use as discipline-specific vocabulary (abundance, distribution, canopy, gradient, confounding factors, strata, substrate), correct nomenclature (Rhizophora stylosa, or R. stylosa after first use), and correct symbols, units and prefixes.

Analysing (5 marks)

Correct and relevant processing means choosing a representation that suits your research question, not defaulting to whatever you used last time. QCAA published the mapping:

The second trap is where limitations come from. In this criterion, limitations are about your data, not your method. QCAA lists what to look at: outliers, the number of data points, how close points sit to the line of best fit, the spread of the data, domain and range, missing data, extraneous variables and confounding factors. Your method gets evaluated in the next criterion.

Interpreting and Evaluating (5 marks)

Marked on your conclusion, your evaluation of the process, and your improvements and extensions.

Note the wording in the middle band: description, and or. A response that describes reliability but not validity, or describes both without justifying either, sits at 2-3 by definition.

Reliability and validity

QCAA's definitions, which are worth learning exactly:

Reliability asks whether another experimenter would obtain the same results. Discuss it using reasoning and evidence, such as patterns in your uncertainty data, about specific aspects of your design or data collection process.

Validity asks whether your experiment measured what you intended. Discuss it by linking back to the purpose you stated in your rationale, and considering how specific design aspects affected whether you measured that thing.

Validity is why the rationale matters more than students expect. If your rationale never stated a clear purpose, you have nothing to evaluate validity against.

Improvements versus extensions

This is the single most confused distinction in QCE science, and it is also mechanical once you see it. Work backwards: every improvement you suggest should trace to a reliability problem you identified in Analysing, and every extension should trace to a validity limit you identified. That is what logically derived from the analysis of evidence means. If a suggestion does not trace back to something you actually found, it belongs in neither list.

Common mistakes

Writing a rationale that summarises the topic. The rationale is not background for its own sake. It has to establish a purpose and explain why your independent and dependent variables are the relevant ones. If a reader cannot say what you were trying to find out and why those variables, it is not considered.

Modifying without justifying. Stating what you changed is a middle-band response. Stating how each change improves reliability or validity is the top band. Every modification needs a because.

Putting method limitations in Analysing. Limitations in Analysing are about the data. Save the method critique for Interpreting and Evaluating, where it is actually rewarded.

Restating uncertainty statistics instead of interpreting them. See above; this is called out explicitly in QCAA's marking commentary.

Generic risk assessments. If your hazard table could be pasted into any experiment, it is not considered management.

Suggestions that do not come from your own results. Improvements and extensions invented at the end, unconnected to anything you found, fail the "logically derived" test even when they are sensible ideas.

Looking for a Communication mark. It no longer exists as a separate criterion. Genre, referencing and scientific language are marked inside Forming and Finding, so sloppy referencing now costs you marks in the criterion covering your rationale.

Before you submit

  • Does your rationale state a clear purpose and explain why your two variables?
  • Does every modification say how it improves reliability or validity?
  • Does your research question connect to Unit 3 concepts, not just to a plant or an animal?
  • Is your risk assessment specific to this investigation?
  • Does your graph type match what you are trying to show?
  • Are your limitations about the data, and your evaluation about the method?
  • Does every improvement trace to a reliability finding, and every extension to a validity limit?
  • Is your referencing consistent, in APA or Harvard, throughout?

Frequently asked questions

How long should the QCE Biology IA2 be?

Up to 2000 words written, or up to 11 minutes multimodal with at least two modes delivered at the same time. QCAA designs the task to take about 10 hours of class time.

What is the difference between an improvement and an extension in IA2?

An improvement addresses something that affected the reliability of your evidence, such as changing from random to stratified sampling to account for zonation. An extension addresses validity, such as collecting data at a different time of year to test seasonal influence. Getting these the wrong way round is one of the most common ways to lose marks in the Interpreting and Evaluating criterion.

Can I do my QCE Biology IA2 in a group?

Parts of it. The syllabus allows identifying the experiment, developing the research question, conducting the risk assessment, running the experiment and collecting data to be done as a group. The analysis, interpretation and write-up must be your own individual work.

Is there still a Communication criterion in IA2?

No. The 2019 marking guide had Communication as a separate criterion, but the 2025 syllabus removed it. Genre conventions, referencing and scientific language are now marked inside the Forming and Finding criteria instead, so they still count, just not as their own mark.

What makes a rationale considered rather than reasonable?

QCAA describes a considered rationale as showing informed application of unit concepts to establish a clear purpose for the experiment, and explaining the relevance of the independent and dependent variables. A reasonable rationale sets up the experiment but does not do both of those things explicitly.
