AusGrader vs Success One HSC (2026): Biology, Chemistry and Physics Papers, Free

By AusGrader Team

Success One HSC, from Pascal Press, is one of the best-known HSC revision books. Each title collects the recent HSC papers and adds worked answers written by experienced markers. It is a solid book. But for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, the core of it (the 2019 to 2025 papers, answers, marking guidelines and multiple-choice explanations) is available on AusGrader for free. And AusGrader does one thing a book cannot: it marks your own answer.

Disclosure: this post is written by AusGrader. We have done our best to represent Success One HSC accurately and fairly, using publicly listed product details at the time of writing. If anything is out of date, please reach out and we will correct it promptly.

1. The Short Answer

The 2026 HSC exams are happening now, so many students are looking at what to use for revision. A 2026 Success One HSC title costs around $43.95 per subject at the time of writing. For a science student doing two sciences, that is about $88 for paperbacks. Each science book has the 2019 to 2025 HSC papers, answers written by experienced HSC markers with a mark distribution, exemplar responses and a "mark maximiser" guide. The Biology book also has 100+ past questions sorted by module.

For Biology, Chemistry and Physics, AusGrader gives you the same core material at no cost. Real NESA past exam questions from 2019 to 2025, with sample answers and the official marking guidelines attached to each question, plus multiple-choice explanations. You do not pay to read a question, see the answer or see how marks are awarded. Note that NESA also publishes HSC papers, marking guidelines and marking feedback free on its own website.

The real difference is not the papers. It is what happens after you write your answer. With a book, you compare your answer to the worked solution and guess what mark you would have got. AusGrader's AI grading is already live and marks your answer, typed or handwritten, against the official criteria. Self-marking is also coming soon.

3. What Success One Does Well

It works on paper. Some students genuinely study better away from a screen, and a book you can scribble in, carry around and spread across your desk is a real advantage. For trial and HSC prep, printing and writing by hand also matches the real exam.

The worked answers are written by experienced HSC markers, and they come with a mark distribution so you can see where the marks sit. The exemplar responses show what a strong answer looks like, and the "mark maximiser" guide gives you tips on how to pick up marks. For a student who wants one tidy, edited resource, that is useful.

Success One also covers Maths Advanced, Maths Standard 2 and Maths Extension 1, which AusGrader does not cover for HSC yet. If you need those, the books are a real option.

4. Everything in the Science Books, Free on AusGrader

Here is what you are paying for in a Success One science title, and where to find the same thing on AusGrader without paying anything. Browse the HSC question bank to see it for yourself.

  • The 2019 to 2025 HSC papers. Every NESA question from those years in Biology, Chemistry and Physics is free to practise.
  • Worked answers. Each question has a sample answer you can open after you attempt it.
  • Mark distribution. The official NESA marking guidelines are shown with each question, so you can see exactly where the marks sit.
  • Multiple-choice explanations. Multiple-choice questions come with an explanation of why the correct option is right.
  • Questions by module. Filter by subject and topic to practise one area at a time, the way the Biology book groups questions by module.
  • Exam technique. Our free study guides cover how each subject is assessed and what the exam rewards. For moving up a band, see how to get from Band 5 to Band 6 in science.
  • Checking your answer. AI grading is already live and marks your answer against the criteria. Self-marking is coming soon.

One honest limit: the exemplar responses and the "mark maximiser" tips are the book's own writing, and we do not copy them. Our sample answers and NESA's marking guidelines cover the same ground, but they are not the same text. NESA also publishes its marking feedback free, which is worth reading for any paper you do.

5. What a Book Can't Do

Mark your answer. The hardest part of practising from a book is knowing what your answer was actually worth. Comparing your paragraph to a marker's worked solution tells you what a good answer looks like, but not which criteria you hit, which you missed, or whether you would have got 3 marks or 5. AusGrader's AI grading is already live and does exactly that, and explains where you gained and lost marks. We go into more detail in how to mark your own practice exams.

Self-marking, coming soon. Some students prefer to mark their own work so they learn the criteria inside out. Self-marking on AusGrader is coming soon (no date yet), so you can tick off the criteria yourself and keep a record of your scores.

Mark your handwriting. Your HSC exams are handwritten, so practising by hand matters. Do a question on paper, photograph it, and AusGrader marks what you actually wrote.

Track your weak topics. Analytics show which topics are costing you marks, so you know where to spend your next study session. A book cannot see your results.

Build custom tests. Pick topics and question types and build a timed practice paper in real exam format. The free plan includes 3 custom test downloads.

6. Price

Success One HSC is around $43.95 per subject at the time of writing. Two science books come to about $88, and three to about $132.

On AusGrader, the questions, answers, marking guidelines and study guides are free, and so are your first 10 AI-graded answers. If you want unlimited grading, it is $100 one-time for 2026, or $50 in NSW, with no auto-renewal. One NSW pass costs less than two science books combined, and it covers every subject we offer.

Remember too that NESA publishes HSC papers, marking guidelines and marking feedback free, so you can build a decent paper-based routine without spending anything.

7. Coverage and Roadmap

Be clear on this before you decide. AusGrader's HSC coverage today is Biology, Chemistry and Physics only. We are expanding HSC to Maths, English, Social Sciences (HSIE) and PDHPE, to match our other states. English for VCE, HSC and WACE arrives in 2027.

Until those subjects land, HSC Maths students should keep using the Success One books or NESA's free packs. We would rather say so than have you wait on us.

8. Who Should Pick Which

Buy Success One HSC if:

  • You study best from a physical book, away from a screen.
  • You want the marker-written exemplars and the "mark maximiser" tips.
  • You need Maths Advanced, Maths Standard 2 or Maths Extension 1, which AusGrader does not cover for HSC yet.
  • Your teacher has set it for your class.

Use AusGrader if:

  • You are doing Biology, Chemistry or Physics and want the papers, answers and marking guidelines without paying per subject.
  • You want to know what your answer was actually worth, not just what a good answer looks like.
  • You want to practise by hand and have your handwriting marked.
  • You want to see which topics are costing you marks.

Or use both:

If you already own a Success One book, keep using it. Do the questions on paper, then find the same question on AusGrader, photograph your answer and get it marked. You get the book you like and the feedback the book cannot give.
