A practice paper you never mark properly is mostly wasted time. Writing answers builds familiarity, but it is the marking step that turns a practice session into actual learning: you find out which marks you lost, why you lost them, and what to do differently next time. This guide walks through how to mark your own work against official materials, the common mistakes students make when self-marking, and the honest limits of the process where AI marking is genuinely more useful.
1. Why Unmarked Practice Is Wasted Practice
The feedback loop is the whole point of practice. Writing an answer without marking it is like shooting free throws in the dark: you are practising the motion, but you have no idea whether the ball is going in. Worse, you tend to remember your answer as better than it was. The moment you finish writing, your brain fills in the gaps between what you meant and what you actually put on the page. By the time you sit down to mark it two days later, the illusion is complete.
The practical rule is to mark within 24 hours of attempting the paper. Your answer is still fresh enough to evaluate honestly, and the connection between the feedback and the thought process that produced the answer is still intact. If you wait a week, the marking exercise becomes abstract and the lesson does not stick.

2. Get the Official Marking Materials for Your Board

QCAA (Queensland). For external assessments (written exams), QCAA publishes marking guides that show the acceptable responses for each question and the criteria examiners apply. These guides are available through the QCAA past papers portal for each subject. Pay attention to the indicative responses for extended answer questions. They show what top-level evidence actually looks like, not just what topics to mention.
VCAA (Victoria). VCAA publishes two things you need: the official exam report (which includes common errors, the mark range for each question, and examiner commentary) and the full-mark sample answers for written response questions. The exam reports are extraordinarily useful because they describe the specific mistakes that dropped students from full marks. Read the report for every past paper you sit.
NESA (New South Wales). NESA publishes marking guidelines alongside the exam paper, and separately publishes marking feedback (formerly called Notes from the Marking Centre) that describes the features of responses at each performance band. Both documents together give you the marking criteria and a concrete picture of what a high-band answer looks like in practice.
SCSA (Western Australia). SCSA publishes marking keys for ATAR course exams. These set out the correct responses and the marks allocated for each part. For extended response questions, the marking key shows the criteria and the point allocation within each criterion. Use these keys alongside the exam paper when you self-mark.
3. Mark Like an Examiner, Not Like Yourself
The most common self-marking mistake is sympathy marking. You read your answer, you know what you were trying to say, and you give yourself credit for the idea you had in your head rather than the words on the page. Real markers can only award marks for what is written. Apply the same rule to yourself: if it is not on the page, it does not get the mark.
Before you score any answer, check whether the command word was actually answered. An "evaluate" question answered with a description does not earn top marks no matter how accurate the content is. The specific demands each command word places on your response are worth understanding thoroughly, because misreading a command word is one of the most avoidable sources of mark loss.
For maths and sciences, check working-marks line by line. Most marking schemes award method marks independently of the final answer. Find where your working diverged from the marking key, not just whether your final answer matched. Be strict about units, significant figures, and (for chemistry) states. These details are explicitly marked in many marking guides and are frequently lost through carelessness.
Cover your answer before reading the marking guide. Check whether your response actually answered the command word before you look at the scheme. This prevents you from reverse-engineering a justification for a mark you should not have awarded.
4. Log Your Error Patterns After Every Paper
Once you have marked a paper, do not just tally the score and move on. Spend five minutes categorising every dropped mark into one of four error types: content gap (you did not know the material), command-word misread (you answered the wrong depth of question), time pressure (you ran short and the answer is incomplete), or careless error (arithmetic slip, missing unit, misread number).
Record the top three error types from each paper. After three or four papers, a pattern will emerge. Most students find that one or two error types account for the majority of their lost marks. That tells you exactly what to fix. A student losing most marks to content gaps needs more time on the syllabus. A student losing marks to command-word misreads needs to practise identifying what each question is actually asking before writing.
Revise by error type, not by paper. Working through "everything I got wrong on the 2023 paper" is less efficient than working through "every command-word misread I have made across all five papers." The second approach builds a targeted habit, the first just revisits specific content in a random order.
Keep a running error log: date, paper, question, mark lost, and error type. Even a simple notes file works. The act of categorising an error makes it significantly less likely to repeat.
5. The Honest Limits of Self-Marking
Self-marking works well for short-answer and calculation questions where the marking key is clear and the answer is either right or wrong. Extended responses are a different matter. When you read your own 200-word response against a marking rubric, you cannot see your own ambiguity. You know what you meant, so the vague sentence reads as the clear one in your head. A reader who did not write the response would read it differently.
There is also a real problem with judging band or criteria descriptors. The difference between a response that "demonstrates understanding" and one that "demonstrates thorough understanding" is not obvious from the inside. Knowing what band descriptors actually look for in top-scoring responses helps, but even then, applying those descriptors to your own writing is genuinely difficult. Your familiarity with the content makes it hard to judge whether you have explained it clearly or just assumed the reader knows what you know.
Marker bias is another real limitation. Research on self-assessment consistently shows that people rate their own work higher than independent raters do, particularly for work they put effort into. The more time you spent on a response, the more likely you are to overestimate it. This is not a character flaw; it is a consistent feature of how self-assessment works. The implication is that extended-response self-marking is systematically optimistic, and your score estimates for your own long answers should be treated with some scepticism.
Self-marking short answers and calculations: accurate and valuable. Self-marking extended responses: structurally limited. Use external feedback (a teacher, a study partner, or AI marking) for any question worth more than four or five marks.
6. When to Let AI Do It
AI marking is useful precisely where self-marking is weakest. A photo of handwritten work, or a typed answer, marked against the official marking guide in under a minute, with feedback tied to the specific criteria. That is a genuinely different feedback loop from reading the marking key yourself and trying to decide whether your answer qualifies.
For extended responses, AI marking addresses both the ambiguity problem and the bias problem. The AI is reading your words without the context of what you meant to write. It applies the criteria in the marking guide the same way a marker would, which surfaces the gaps and vague sentences that self-marking consistently misses.
