AusGrader vs Creelman Exam Questions (2026): Is the Book Worth It?

By AusGrader Team

Creelman Exam Questions books are a WA staple: real past WACE exam questions, sorted by syllabus topic, with model answers, for $50 a subject. AusGrader gives you the same thing for free. Every past WACE exam question from 2020 to 2025, sorted by topic, with the official SCSA marking key attached. Then it goes one step further and marks the answer you actually wrote, typed or handwritten, against that marking key.

Disclosure: this article is written by the AusGrader team. We have done our best to represent Creelman Exam Questions fairly and accurately, and have only stated things we can verify. Creelman details and prices below were taken from retailer listings for the 2026 editions at the time of writing; check the retailer for any changes.

1. The Short Answer

A Year 12 Creelman book is a collection of actual WACE exam questions from the past six years, regrouped by syllabus topic, with model answers and examiner tips. It is a print book, one per subject, and a new edition comes out every year. Each 2026 title is $50.

AusGrader is built on the same idea: real past WACE questions, sorted by topic, so you can drill the areas you are weakest in. The difference is that on AusGrader it costs nothing, it covers all your subjects in one place, and you are not left to mark yourself. Write your answer (or photograph your handwritten working), and AusGrader marks it against the official SCSA marking key and tells you where you dropped marks, in under a minute.

A student taking five ATAR subjects would spend $250 on Year 12 Creelman books. On AusGrader, the question bank for all five is free, your first 10 answers are AI-marked free, and unlimited marking across every subject is $100 for the rest of 2026.

3. What Creelman Does Well

The core idea behind Creelman is right. Practising on real WACE questions, grouped by topic, is far better than working through made-up questions, and a book is easy to carry around and work through without a screen. The titles are written by experienced WA teachers, and some authors have served as WACE examiners.

Creelman also sells Year 11 (Units 1 and 2) books. Because there is no Year 11 external exam, those books are built from test and exam questions used by various schools rather than SCSA papers. AusGrader focuses on the official Year 12 WACE exams.

4. Everything in the Book, Free

Everything that makes a Year 12 Creelman book useful is free on AusGrader. Every question from the 2020 to 2025 WACE exams is there, sorted by syllabus topic, and you can practise all of them without paying. Each question comes with the official SCSA marking key, which is exactly what markers use to award marks, so you see the real standard rather than one author's model answer.

Then AusGrader does the part a book cannot. A book gives you the question and an answer, but nobody checks your answer. On AusGrader you submit what you wrote and get a mark and written feedback against the marking key in under a minute. You can photograph handwritten working, so you practise the same way you will sit the exam. Every marked attempt feeds your topic analytics, so you can see which topics are actually costing you marks instead of guessing.

6. The Differences That Actually Matter

Self-marking versus being marked. With a book, you compare your answer to the model answer and decide what you deserve. That works for a numerical answer, but for a written explanation it is easy to give yourself a mark the examiner would not. The limits of self-marking are worth understanding before you rely on it. AusGrader marks against the official key, so the feedback reflects what a WACE marker looks for.

One cost versus one per subject. Creelman is $50 per subject, and a new edition each year. AusGrader's question bank is free for every subject, and its paid plan is a single $100 for all of them.

Knowing where to focus. A book cannot tell you which topics you keep losing marks on. AusGrader's analytics build that picture from your marked attempts, so your remaining weeks go to the topics that move your score.

7. Who Should Pick Which

A Creelman book makes sense if you...

  • Take Politics and Law, Religion and Life, or (until 2027) Accounting and Finance
  • Want Year 11 practice from school test questions
  • Already have it on your school booklist

AusGrader makes sense if you...

  • Want topic-sorted past WACE questions without paying $50 a subject
  • Want your answer marked against the official SCSA marking key, not your own judgement
  • Practise in handwriting and want feedback on it
  • Want all your subjects and your weak topics in one place

If a Creelman book is already on your booklist, you do not need to choose. Use AusGrader's free tier to get the questions you attempt from it marked. For a wider look at what is available in WA, see the best WACE study tools for 2026.
