Best Subjects for a High ATAR in VCE, HSC & WACE

Every Year 10 and 11 student choosing senior subjects hears the same advice: pick Specialist Maths and Physics because they scale up. Scaling is real, and at the margin it does matter. But the advice is incomplete, and for many students it is actively harmful. Scaling is a statistical adjustment applied to your raw performance, and it cannot rescue a weak raw score. 1. How Scaling Actually Works (and What It Is Not)

Scaling exists to solve a fairness problem. Your ATAR is a rank across every student in your state, but students sit different subjects, and some subjects attract stronger cohorts than others. Sitting in the middle of the Specialist Maths cohort means something different from sitting in the middle of a subject with a much broader mix of students. Scaling adjusts each subject's marks so that results can be compared fairly across subjects.

The key point most students miss: scaling reflects the strength of the cohort taking a subject, not how hard the content is. A subject scales up when the students taking it tend to perform strongly across their other subjects too. Scaling is also recalculated every single year. Scaling is not a difficulty bonus and it is not a reward for bravery. It is a statistical adjustment based on who else sat the subject that year. If you are choosing a subject purely because of its scaling reputation, you are betting on the cohort composition, not on your own performance.

2. The Subjects That Typically Scale Up (and the Trap)

With the caveat that scaling changes every year, some patterns have held in recent years across the three states:

  • Specialist and Extension-level mathematics have typically scaled up, often significantly, because they attract cohorts of strong maths students who also perform well in their other studies.
  • Physics and Chemistry have typically scaled up in recent years, again reflecting the academically capable cohorts they draw.
  • Latin and several other languages have typically scaled well, as language cohorts tend to be small and high-achieving.
  • Subjects with broad cohorts (standard-level maths, many humanities and arts subjects) typically scale near neutral or slightly down, because they draw a wide cross-section of students.

Here is the trap. Those patterns tempt students into loading up on Specialist Maths, Physics, and Chemistry regardless of aptitude or interest. But the same cohort effect that makes those subjects scale up also makes them brutally competitive. To achieve a strong raw score in Specialist Maths, you have to outperform a cohort of the strongest maths students in your state. If that describes you, wonderful. If it does not, the scaling will be adjusting a mediocre raw score, and the outcome will disappoint.

In VCE, a study score of 30 in a strongly scaled study can beat a 35 in a weakly scaled one at the ATAR level. That sounds compelling. But a study score of 25 in Specialist Maths rarely beats a 40 in General Maths, no matter how generous the scaling. The adjustment shifts scores by a bounded amount. It cannot transform a struggling student into a top one.

3. Why Chasing "Easy Scaled Marks" Backfires

Scaling adjusts your score relative to your cohort rank. It does not add marks on top of your raw performance independent of where you sit in the cohort. A student in the bottom quarter of a scaled subject receives far less benefit from the scaling than a student near the top. This is the mechanics that the "pick scaled subjects" crowd consistently underemphasises.

There is also a hidden cost that never appears in scaling tables. A subject you find genuinely difficult drains study time and mental energy from every other subject on your list. Senior courses run for roughly eighteen months. Sustained effort over that period comes from two things: genuine interest in the material, and a teacher who delivers it well. A subject you are engaged by, taught by a strong teacher, will almost always produce a better final result than a "prestige" subject you dread, because you will consistently put in the work.

One honest question for each candidate subject: "Am I likely to finish near the top of this cohort?" If the answer is no, the scaling reputation is largely irrelevant. A high raw score in a neutral-scaling subject outperforms a low raw score in a strongly scaled one in the overwhelming majority of cases.

4. Board-by-Board Notes: VCE, HSC, and WACE

VCE (Victoria)

Each study produces a study score out of 50, which VTAC then scales based on that year's cohort. In recent years, Specialist Maths, Physics, and Chemistry have typically received upward scaling adjustments, while subjects with broader and more diverse cohorts have tended to scale near neutral or slightly below. A moderate study score in a strongly scaled subject can outperform a higher score in a weakly scaled one, but the effect has limits. HSC (New South Wales)

UAC derives scaled marks for every course from cohort performance, and those scaled marks feed your ATAR. Extension courses (Mathematics Extension 1 and 2, English Extension, and others) have typically scaled strongly in recent years, because they attract the strongest students in each discipline. WACE (Western Australia)

Your ATAR comes from your best four scaled scores. WA also applies explicit bonus adjustments: a bonus for completing a LOTE (language) course, and a bonus for Mathematics Methods or Specialist Mathematics, applied on top of the scaled score. 5. The Actual Strategy: Strength, Prerequisites, Then Scaling

The framework that holds up across all three systems is the same. Work through this order of priority when making your selections.

First, identify your genuine strengths. Look at your Years 9 and 10 results honestly, topic by topic rather than by general impression of a subject. Consistent high performance is the strongest predictor of where you will rank in a senior cohort. Starting from strength is not playing it safe; it is the highest-yield strategy available to most students.

Second, check prerequisites. Many university courses in medicine, engineering, law, and education require specific subjects at specific levels. Medicine and health programs frequently require Chemistry and Biology. Engineering programs often require Mathematical Methods or equivalent. English requirements vary widely by institution and state. A strong ATAR does not help if you are missing a prerequisite for your target degree. Look up the prerequisite pages for the specific degrees you are considering at the universities you are targeting, and lock in those requirements before any other consideration.

Third, use scaling as the tiebreaker. Only when two subjects are genuinely level on the first two criteria should historical scaling patterns decide. If you would score similarly in Physics and in another science, and Physics has typically scaled better in recent years, take Physics. That is the correct use of scaling: a marginal tiebreaker, not a primary strategy.

7. Pick Subjects You Can Win

There is no universal list of the best subjects for a high ATAR, because the best subjects for your ATAR are the ones you will score highly in. Scaling is real, it typically favours the specialist maths, sciences, and languages in recent years, and in WA the maths and language bonuses add a genuine additional incentive. But scaling adjusts your raw performance relative to your cohort. It does not replace raw performance.
