VCE Methods Exam 1 and 2: Format, Timing and Common Mistakes (VCAA)
Quick answer
VCE Mathematical Methods has two written exams, both set by VCAA. Exam 1 is 1 hour and 40 marks of short-answer and extended-answer questions, with no calculator, no software and no notes. Exam 2 is 2 hours and 80 marks (20 multiple-choice marks, then extended-answer questions), and you may use an approved CAS calculator or CAS software, a scientific calculator and one bound reference. Both give 15 minutes of reading time and a formula sheet, and Exam 1 is 20% of your study score while Exam 2 is 40%. In 2026 Exam 1 is on Thursday 5 November at 9:00 am and Exam 2 on Friday 6 November at 11:45 am.
This describes the Mathematics Study Design 2023 to 2027 for Units 3 and 4, which Year 12 students sit under in 2026. Paper details come from the 2025 papers and their assessor reports, and older years are labelled where they differ. For the rest of the subject, start at VCE Mathematical Methods past exams (VCAA).
How are the two VCE Methods exams set out?
| Exam 1 | Exam 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight in your study score | 20% | 40% |
| Reading time | 15 minutes | 15 minutes |
| Writing time | 1 hour | 2 hours |
| Marks | 40 | 80 |
| Layout | 8 or 9 short-answer questions (9 in 2025) | Section A: 20 multiple-choice questions, 20 marks. Section B: 4 or 5 extended-answer questions, 60 marks (4 in 2025) |
| Technology | None | CAS calculator or software, plus a scientific calculator |
| Notes | None | One bound reference |
| Supplied | Formula sheet | Formula sheet and a multiple-choice answer sheet |
The study design says Exam 1 covers all areas of study in relation to Outcome 1, the defining and explaining of key concepts and the routines and procedures that go with them. Exam 2 covers all three outcomes with the emphasis on Outcome 2, the non-routine and modelling work. The 2025 Exam 1 covered differentiation, antidifferentiation, trigonometric and exponential equations, a cubic, discrete and continuous probability and the binomial distribution, all by hand. Exam 2 questions in 2025 ran across a context for several parts, such as the driver's travel time below.
Both papers work out at 1.5 minutes a mark across the writing time. That is our arithmetic, not a VCAA figure, but it is a pace you can rehearse against.
The two papers are on different days. For where they sit among your other exams, see the VCE exam timetable 2026.
What can you take into Exam 1 and Exam 2?
Exam 1. Nothing electronic and no notes. The 2025 cover says students may not bring any technology (calculators or software) or notes of any kind into the room. The formula sheet is supplied, and VCE Mathematical Methods formula sheet covers what is on it.
Exam 2. The 2025 cover lists protractors, set squares, aids for curve sketching, one bound reference, and one approved CAS calculator or CAS software together with one scientific calculator. VCAA's approved CAS calculators for 2026 are the Casio Algebra and ClassPad series, the HP 40, 48, 49 and 50 and the HP Prime series, and the Texas Instruments TI-89, TI-92, Voyager and TI-Nspire CAS series. CAS software needs your school to hold written approval from VCAA.
The bound reference. VCAA's rules say it must be A4 or smaller when closed, permanently bound with a single horizontal or vertical spine, and not designed to have pages removed. A textbook, a securely bound lecture pad, a bound set of your own notes without fold-outs and an exercise book all qualify. Glue, staple, spiral or comb binding are all accepted, and a teacher checks it as you enter the room. The study design allows it to be annotated.
When are the 2026 VCE Methods exams?
Exam 1 is Thursday 5 November, 9:00 am to 10:15 am, which is 15 minutes of reading time then 1 hour of writing. Exam 2 is Friday 6 November, 11:45 am to 2:00 pm, which is 15 minutes of reading then 2 hours of writing. VCAA's timetable is the authority and can change, so check the VCE exam timetable 2026 the week before. Northern Hemisphere Timetable papers for Methods also exist, and VCE NHT exams explains what they are and how to use them.
How much are the Methods exams worth?
Units 3 and 4 school-assessed coursework is 40% of the study score, Exam 1 is 20% and Exam 2 is 40%. So the two exams together are 60%, and Exam 2 alone is the same weight as all of your SACs. How SACs are moderated against your exam results is covered in VCE SACs explained, and how a study score becomes an ATAR input is in VCE study scores.
What does VCAA say costs marks in the Methods exams?
The 2024 and 2025 assessor reports for both papers say the same few things. VCAA's wording is quoted where it matters.
Working. For Exam 1, "students are reminded that for any question worth more than one mark, working must be shown in order to be awarded full marks" (2025, p. 12). For Exam 2, "appropriate working must be shown for questions worth more than one mark" (2024, p. 1). Both papers print the instruction on the front, and both reports keep naming questions where students wrote down an answer alone.
"Show that" is not "check that". The 2025 Exam 1 report on a show-that question says each line of working "needed to demonstrate a clear, logical and explicit progression, leading to the result provided in the question stem" (p. 7). The 2024 Exam 2 report asks students to practise show-that questions. Of the three it names, Questions 4c.i and 5b.ii "were not done well" (2024 Exam 2, p. 1).
Exact values. Both papers tell you to give an exact value unless told otherwise. The 2024 Exam 2 report names five parts where students gave an approximation (p. 1), and the 2025 Exam 2 report records students who gave an approximate answer to Question 2b and were not awarded full marks (p. 13).
Notation. The reports are specific here. "Students should also use the names of functions as given in the question" and, if a question asks for the derivative of a function called y, writing "y =" is "not acceptable" because it must be dy/dx (2025 Exam 1, p. 1). An integral must carry a dx, and log needs its e as a subscript. In Exam 2, "a number of students did not use interval notation correctly, writing the correct values in reverse order" and round brackets are needed on coordinates (2024 Exam 2, p. 1).
CAS entry and transcription. The 2025 Exam 2 report says "students should check the values they enter into their CAS as some students had the correct definite integral but ended up with an incorrect answer" (p. 8). It also notes that students who mixed CAS and algebraic steps in one part could not gain full marks (p. 10).
Presentation. Scanned images are used for assessing. The 2024 Exam 1 report asks for dark ink or a 2B pencil, and says light or dashed lines such as asymptotes "may not be easily detected" in the scan. The 2025 Exam 1 report repeats it for graphs, and the 2025 Exam 2 report says to use a ruler when drawing lines. If you leave two conflicting answers, "full marks cannot be awarded".
What do real Methods exam questions look like?
These three are from the 2025 papers. The percentages are VCAA's own, for the whole state cohort.
Exam 1, Question 4a: a show-that probability question
A table gives the probabilities of a discrete random variable in terms of a positive real number k, and the question says: show that k = 10 or k = 15. VCAA's distribution: 26% scored 0, 18% scored 1 and 56% scored 2, an average of 1.3 out of 2.
The expected working is that the probabilities add to 1, which forms a quadratic, which you solve to get k = 10 or k = 15. The report says it "was not sufficient to verify the solutions of k = 10 or k = 15 by substitution". It also records students who used the formula for E(X) instead of the sum of the probabilities (p. 7).
Exam 1, Question 7d.ii: one mark, and 73% scored zero
Part b of this question factorises as . Part d then asks for the values of where , with . The product is . VCAA's answer is or , and the average was 0.3 out of 1 (p. 13).
The report lists wrong answers it saw: an interval with 2 in place of -2 (the missing negative sign), the closed interval , and . It adds that sketching the graph of the product, which the question did not require, could be used to find the interval. On the part before it, d.i, the report says students who expanded the product instead of using the factorised form from part b made the question "unnecessarily difficult" (p. 13).
Exam 2, Question 3b.iv: an integer was required
A driver's travel time has a given probability density function, and the driver is late if the trip takes longer than k minutes. Part b.iv asks for the integer k at which the probability of being late at least once in a five-day week is 0.2, correct to one decimal place. It was worth 2 marks and VCAA's distribution was 67% scoring 0, 16% scoring 1 and 17% scoring 2, an average of 0.5.
The report says "k = 49.1 was a common incorrect answer. An integer value was required", and that some students just gave the answer without the working asked for, while others used trial and error correctly (2025 Exam 2, p. 15). The earlier part b.ii, on the same setup, shows the pattern for a CAS part: write the model that gives the number, such as , not the number alone. The report notes that some students gave the answer only, and others rounded to 0.3657 (p. 14).
Common mistakes in the Methods exams
Weak versus strong wording
The wording is ours, written to illustrate errors each report describes, and each row names the question.
| Weak | Strong | Why, per VCAA |
|---|---|---|
| "k = 10 and k = 15 both work when I check them" | Sum the probabilities to 1, form the quadratic, solve it | The question asks you to show the result, so verification by substitution is not enough (2025 Exam 1, Q4a) |
| or | A missing negative sign was a common wrong answer (2025 Exam 1, Q7d.ii) | |
| Endpoints are written lower value first, and the report lists as an error (2025 Exam 1, Q3a) | ||
| for the derivative of | A derivative has to be named dy/dx when the question defines y (2025 Exam 1 general comments; the example is Question 1a) | |
| 0.3658 on its own | Answer-only responses were penalised, and 0.3657 was a rounding error seen (2025 Exam 2, Q3b.ii) | |
| Test integer values of k, or find the probability for one day and solve | The question required an integer (2025 Exam 2, Q3b.iv) |
How should you prepare for Exam 1 and Exam 2?
Use the marked past papers as the reports use them: attempt a paper under time, then read what VCAA wrote about each question you lost marks on. Each paper wants a different kind of practice.
For Exam 1, do whole papers without technology, and write exact answers every time. The papers are short, so a full 40-mark paper in one hour is a realistic rehearsal. Sketch curves in pencil, use the grid provided, and press asymptotes dark enough to show on the scan.
For Exam 2, practise Section A as its own timed block, then practise moving between CAS and algebra inside one question. The 2025 report says students who combined CAS and algebraic steps in one part sometimes could not gain full marks, and that definite integrals were entered into the CAS incorrectly even when the setup was right, so write the integral you are entering before you enter it.
The marked questions for every VCAA paper from 2020 to 2025 are on VCE Mathematical Methods past exams (VCAA). To decide what to revise first, use VCE Mathematical Methods most tested topics and VCE Mathematical Methods hardest topics, and for the topic-by-topic question sets start at Calculus. Command terms like verify, show that and hence have precise meanings in these papers, and VCE command terms covers them. For the planning side across all your exams, see how to prepare for VCE exams.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a calculator in VCE Methods Exam 1?
No. The 2025 Exam 1 cover says students may not bring any technology, meaning calculators or software, or notes of any kind into the room. VCAA supplies a formula sheet, and the study design describes Exam 1 as technology-free.
Do I need a CAS calculator for Methods Exam 2?
VCAA lets you use one approved CAS calculator or CAS software, plus one scientific calculator. CAS software is allowed only where VCAA has given your school written approval. What your school expects you to bring is a question for your Methods teacher.
What can go in my Methods bound reference?
Exam 2 only. VCAA describes it as a book of A4 size or smaller when closed, permanently bound to a single spine, with pages that cannot be easily removed. A textbook, a bound lecture pad, a bound set of your own notes without fold-outs or an exercise book all qualify. Exam 1 allows nothing of the kind.
Are marks taken off for wrong multiple-choice answers in Methods Exam 2?
No. Section A instructions on the 2025 paper say a correct answer scores 1, an incorrect answer scores 0 and marks are not deducted for incorrect answers. Marking two options for one question scores nothing, so leave no question with two answers.
Is a correct final answer enough for full marks in Methods?
Not when a question is worth more than one mark. Both papers print the instruction that appropriate working must be shown for those questions, and the 2025 Exam 1 report says working must be shown to be awarded full marks. A correct answer from incorrect working does not earn them either.
How many questions are in Methods Exam 2 Section B?
It varies by year. The 2020 to 2023 papers had five Section B questions for 60 marks, and the 2025 paper had four for the same 60 marks. Section A has been 20 multiple-choice questions for 20 marks in each paper checked.
