VCE exam day rules
From VCAA's examination rules for 2026:
- Bring only what your exam allows. Check the approved materials for each study before the day.
- No phones or smart devices. That includes computerised watches and anything that can store, receive or send information.
- No food or drink other than bottled water, under the conditions VCAA approves.
- You can't leave early or late. Not before 30 minutes of writing time have passed, and not in the last 5 minutes.
- Late by up to 30 minutes: you are let in with the full writing time but no reading time. Later than that, entry is conditional and your responses may not be accepted.
If you're ill or something happens around an exam, you may be eligible for a Derived Examination Score. Students apply for it themselves through their school, so tell your VCE coordinator straight away.
Getting ready for your first exam
For how to use the weeks you have left, see how to prepare for VCE exams: it plans backwards from these dates. Each study in blue above links to its VCAA past exams, marked by AusGrader.
Frequently asked questions
When do the VCE exams finish in 2026?
The last written exams are on Wednesday 18 November 2026: Japanese Second Language in the morning, then Chinese Second Language and Chinese Second Language Advanced from 2:00 pm. Most students finish earlier, because the larger studies are timetabled in the first three weeks.
Are there VCE exams on Melbourne Cup Day?
No. Tuesday 3 November 2026 is the Melbourne Cup public holiday and VCAA has timetabled no exams that day. Exams pick up again on Wednesday 4 November.
Why does my afternoon VCE exam start at 2:00 pm and not 3:00 pm?
On days with only two sessions (Friday 30 October, Monday 2 November, Tuesday 10 November, Thursday 12 November and Wednesday 18 November) the afternoon exam starts at 2:00 pm. On days with three sessions it starts at 3:00 pm.
What happens if I arrive late to a VCE exam?
If you arrive up to 30 minutes after writing time starts, you are let in and get the full writing time, but no reading time. After 30 minutes you can be admitted only under conditions VCAA sets, and your responses may not be accepted, so aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start.
