QCAA Maths Methods external exam: format, timing and marking (QCE)
Quick answer
The QCAA Mathematical Methods external exam that every QCE Methods student sits is two papers, each 25% of your subject result, each with 5 minutes of perusal and 90 minutes of working. Paper 1 is technology-free and Paper 2 allows a QCAA-approved graphics calculator (no CAS) and/or scientific calculator, with the QCAA formula book provided in both. QCAA marks every script itself against a marking guide that attaches marks to individual steps, and in 2026 both papers are on Friday 13 November, Paper 1 in the morning and Paper 2 in the afternoon.
This describes the Mathematical Methods 2025 v1.2 syllabus, which Year 12 students sit under from 2026, with Units 1 and 2 assumed knowledge. The 2023 to 2025 papers and reports were set under the superseded 2019 syllabus, so every paper example below carries its year. The 50% weighting is unchanged between the two versions. For the other assessments and the whole-subject picture, see the Mathematical Methods study guide and the Mathematical Methods question bank, which holds the past papers.
What is on the QCAA Maths Methods external exam?
The syllabus fixes the shape, and the marking guides show how the board has filled it.
| Paper 1 | Paper 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| Weighting | 25% | 25% |
| Technology | none | graphics calculator (no CAS) and/or scientific calculator |
| Time | 5 minutes perusal, 90 minutes working | 5 minutes perusal, 90 minutes working |
| Provided | QCAA Mathematical Methods formula book | QCAA Mathematical Methods formula book |
| Marks as sat, 2021 to 2025 | 55 | 55 |
| Mix as sat, 2021 to 2025 | 10 multiple choice, 45 short response | 10 multiple choice, 45 short response |
Both papers draw on Units 3 and 4, may use assumed knowledge from Units 1 and 2, and assess all six objectives. The syllabus allows multiple choice and short response but publishes no mark total and no count of multiple-choice items, so the 55-mark, 10-plus-45 shape is what the board has done, not what it has promised. It was different once: the 2020 Paper 1 marking guide is headed 60 marks, and the 2020 short-response sections add to 50.
Each paper is built to the same difficulty mix as the internal examinations, 60% simple familiar, 20% complex familiar and 20% complex unfamiliar, within 2%. The IA2 and IA3 guide explains what each level means.
How is the Methods external exam marked?
QCAA marks it, against an External Assessment Marking Guide published for each year. That is a different document from the instrument-specific marking guide in the syllabus, which covers only the three internal assessments. The exam guide prints a sample response and, beside it, a list of what the response does, with a mark attached to each line.
Three rules from the front of the 2025 guide shape how you should write:
- Zero is for no match. Where a response meets none of the descriptors for a question, it records a mark of 0.
- Follow-through. The guide defines it as an error in an earlier section of working that is used later, where the later marks can still be awarded so long as the rest "still demonstrates the correct conceptual understanding or skill".
- Implied marks. A mark may be given when the step is not written out, if later working is enough evidence for it.
The consequence is simple. A slip in part (a) does not end the question, and a missing line is not always a missing mark, but you only get either benefit if there is working for the marker to read.
In 2025 the short-response questions were worth 4 to 6 marks each on Paper 1 and 3 to 7 on Paper 2, and the 2025 subject report asks teachers to encourage students to use the allocated marks as a guide for the depth of their response. Question 15 below has six marks and the guide lists six separate things to credit, so a two-line answer cannot collect them.
Where do the marks sit in a real question?
Three 2025 questions, with the mark splits taken from the marking guides.
In all three, the last mark is for the sentence that says what the working shows. QCAA names evaluating the reasonableness of solutions in its external assessment advice in the 2023 and 2025 reports, and the mark splits show why: it is a mark you can only collect by writing a verdict.
The 2023 Paper 1 Question 17 (6 marks) shows the other trap, which is reading. It asked students to determine the time of day when the rate of absorption of a chemical is at its maximum and to use calculus to verify the time gives a maximum rate. The report says many students performed the second derivative test on the given function instead of first differentiating to get the rate, and gives the cause: "Being a well-rehearsed procedure, it is likely many students incorrectly assumed that this standard procedure was sufficient to solve the problem." The rate was the quantity to be maximised, so the report notes that verifying the maximum required the third derivative.
What can you take into Paper 1 and Paper 2?
Paper 1 allows nothing: no notes, calculators, technology or other resources. QCAA hands you the formula book. Anything the book does not print has to come from you, and every calculation is done by hand. The formula sheet guide shows how to check what the book leaves out.
Paper 2 allows a handheld QCAA-approved graphics calculator with no CAS functionality and/or a handheld QCAA-approved scientific calculator, with no notes or other resources. QCAA publishes an approved list for each calculator type. In August 2026 it updated both: the Texas Instruments TI-84 Evo is now on the graphics list, the Casio fx-8200 AU II is now on the scientific list, the reset and clear instructions for approved graphics calculators changed, and the Casio fx-1AU GRAPH instructions were updated. Check your own model on the current list, since the syllabus requires a QCAA-approved calculator.
Technology does not mean the working goes. The 2025 Paper 2 marking guide still allocates marks to the steps, and Question 18 above credits a z-score and an equation before the answer. The sample response labels each calculator step "Use a GDC" before giving the value, so say what you used the calculator for.
When is the Methods external exam?
QCAA's 2026 timetable puts both Mathematical Methods papers in Week 3 of the General subject exams, on Friday 13 November 2026: Paper 1 in the morning session and Paper 2 in the afternoon. Each is listed as 90 minutes plus 5 minutes. The whole General window runs from 26 October to 17 November.
The timetable prints AM and PM only, not clock times, so your school's exam schedule is the source for the start time and room. Two papers in one day is a different load from General Mathematics and Specialist Mathematics, whose papers fall on consecutive days. The full list of subjects, clash rules and calculator lists is on the QCAA external exam timetable, and the timetable is reissued each year.
What changed for the 2026 Methods external exam?
That is the board's own list for the first cohort assessed on Units 3 and 4 under the 2025 syllabus. Older papers still make good practice, but check each question against it: a past question that depends on arithmetic or geometric progressions, or on integration by recognition, tests content the 2025 syllabus has removed. Logarithms moved to Unit 2 and did not leave the course, so as Units 1 and 2 assumed knowledge they can still be drawn on.
How should you prepare for the two papers?
Work out which paper each skill belongs to, then practise it under that paper's conditions.
- Do Paper 1 sets by hand. QCAA's 2024 report leads its practices to strengthen with technology-free algebraic fluency, such as expanding a squared bracket, and the 2025 report says many students struggle with confidence intervals when technology is not allowed.
- Treat Units 1 and 2 as live. The 2024 and 2025 reports both tell schools that content from Units 1 and 2 is assumed knowledge in a Units 3 and 4 question.
- Practise the final line. After every worked question, write the sentence the marking guide would credit: the conclusion, the verdict on reasonableness, the decision.
- Read the stem for the quantity asked. The 2025 report asks teachers to encourage students to read questions carefully to confirm they have answered what is being asked.
- Use the weak spots QCAA has named three years running. The study guide ranks them, starting with second-derivative work in an unfamiliar context. Further applications of differentiation is the matching topic to drill.
A technology-free penalty does not show up in our data. Across our marked attempts on the 2020 to 2025 papers, Paper 1 averages sit below Paper 2 in three of the six years and above it in the other three, with 117 to 542 attempts per paper per year. That is a self-selected sample, so we draw no conclusion from it. QCAA's own advice on technology-free algebra stands without our numbers.
The Mathematical Methods question bank has Paper 1 and Paper 2 for 2020 to 2025 to work through, and the QCE exam preparation guide covers the weeks before the exam block.
Frequently asked questions
Are both Mathematical Methods external papers on the same day?
In 2026 they are. QCAA's timetable puts Paper 1 on the morning of Friday 13 November and Paper 2 on the afternoon of the same day. The timetable prints AM and PM sessions only, so your school's exam schedule gives the start times. The timetable changes each year, so check the current one.
How many marks is each Mathematical Methods external paper?
The syllabus sets no mark total, only a 25% weighting per paper. In practice the 2021 to 2025 papers were each 55 marks, made up of 10 multiple-choice marks and 45 short-response marks, and the 2025 marking guides state the 55 in their headings. The 2020 Paper 1 marking guide is headed 60 marks, so do not assume every older paper matches.
What is a follow-through mark in the Methods exam?
QCAA's marking guide defines it as a mark that can still be awarded for the rest of a response when an error in an earlier section of working is used later, provided the later working shows the correct conceptual understanding or skill. It is why you keep writing after you notice a slip. The same note goes on to say a mark may be implied by later working when a step is not written out.
Do I lose marks for not writing a conclusion?
On some questions, yes. In the 2025 marking guides the last mark on the point of inflection question is for concluding that x = 3 is an inflection point, and the last mark on the confidence interval question is for determining whether the claim is reasonable. Getting the number right and stopping before the verdict leaves that mark behind.
What do I have to do with my graphics calculator before the exam?
QCAA's memo 044/26 says the instructions for resetting or clearing approved graphics calculators before and after external assessment were updated in 2026, and that the instructions for the Casio fx-1AU GRAPH changed. Follow the current instructions for your model on QCAA's graphics calculator list.
